A search or AI system that resolves a question directly with a generated or extracted answer, instead of a list of links to click.
An answer engine is any system that gives a searcher the answer itself, drawn from and often citing one or more sources, rather than a ranked list of pages to visit. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity with web browsing, and Gemini's search-grounded responses are all answer engines in this sense, even though they differ in how they retrieve and cite sources.
The distinction that matters for a site owner is where the click goes, if it happens at all. A traditional results page sends the click to whichever page the searcher picks. An answer engine may satisfy the question on the spot and cite only a small number of sources, sometimes just one or two, so being one of those cited sources carries outsized weight compared to a traditional ranking position further down the page.
Answer engines choose sources differently from classic ranking too. They tend to favour pages with a clear, self-contained, extractable answer near the top, factual precision they can verify, and structure such as headings, lists and defined terms that makes lifting a passage reliable. A page that is accurate but written as one long undifferentiated block of prose is harder for an answer engine to quote, even if it would rank well in a traditional list.
Optimising specifically for being cited by an answer engine is what Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) means. Semantyra tracks whether a brand is mentioned and cited across the major answer engines for a chosen set of prompts, and reports the result per engine rather than as one blended percentage.
