A GEO checklist: making a page quotable by an AI
2026-09-07
Generative engine optimisation is making content that an AI answer engine can extract a confident answer from and is willing to cite. It sits alongside classic SEO: the same page usually needs to rank and to be quotable. What a generative engine wants is a little different from what a ranking algorithm wants, and it comes down to a few concrete things.
State the answer plainly, near the top
A model extracting an answer prefers a sentence that states the point directly over a page that buries it under introduction and caveats. If the page answers a question, answer it in the first paragraph in one or two clear sentences, then expand below.
Avoid hedging language where you can be definite. "It depends" and "there are many factors" are hard to quote. If the honest answer has conditions, state the main answer first and the conditions after.
Use structure that maps to sub-questions
Headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables let a model line up a section with a sub-question. A wall of text forces it to guess where the relevant part is.
Make each heading a real question or a clear topic, not a clever phrase. "How much does it cost" is more extractable than "Investment".
Define your entities and back your claims
Name the entities involved and define the ones a reader might not know, so the model can resolve them. A page full of undefined jargon is risky for a model to quote.
Support statements with data, sources or concrete examples. A claim with evidence attached is one a model can repeat safely. A bare assertion is one it will hedge or drop.
Be the clearest source, not the biggest
Length is not the goal. A 400-word page that answers the question directly and completely will be cited over a 3,000-word page that circles it.
Semantyra measures the signals that feed GEO, entity coverage, content depth, structure and internal linking, and its AI-visibility checks show which prompts a model already answers with your content.
The takeaway
Answer the question plainly in the first paragraph, use question-shaped headings and short structured sections, define your entities and attach evidence to claims, and aim to be the clearest source rather than the longest.
