Internal link anchor text: what actually helps
2026-09-07
Every internal link does two jobs: it passes a share of authority, and it sends a relevance signal about the target through its anchor text. Most sites get the first job for free and waste the second. "Learn more", "click here" and "read this" are links with no topic signal at all.
What a good internal anchor does
A good internal anchor names the concept the target page is about, in the words a reader would use. If the target page is about keyword cannibalisation, the anchor should contain "keyword cannibalisation" or a close natural variant, not "this issue" or "our guide".
It should read naturally in the sentence. Anchor text that has clearly been forced in for SEO reads as spam to both readers and search engines. The fix is usually to write the sentence around the link rather than dropping the link into a finished sentence.
What to avoid
Avoid exact-match anchors repeated dozens of times across the site. Some variation is natural and expected. A site where every link to a page uses the identical keyword anchor looks manipulated.
Avoid linking the same phrase to different pages. If "topical authority" links to the pillar on one page and to a glossary entry on another, the signal is muddled. Pick the canonical target for each concept and be consistent.
Avoid burying the important links in the footer. A contextual link in the body of a related paragraph carries far more weight than the same link in a list of forty footer links.
A simple process
When you add an internal link, write down the concept the target page owns. Use that concept, or a natural variant of it, as the anchor. Place the link in a sentence where that concept is actually being discussed.
Semantyra recommends the anchor concept for each internal link it suggests, derived from the target page topic, so the anchor reinforces the relationship rather than being an afterthought.
The takeaway
Use anchor text that names the target concept in natural words, keep it consistent across the site, place links in relevant body paragraphs rather than footers, and vary the phrasing enough that it reads like writing rather than optimisation.
